Baja California Gray Whale Tours

An estimated 18,000 California gray whales migrate over 4,000 miles south every fall from Alaska’s Bering Sea to the tranquil lagoons of Baja California. Here they spend the winter feeding, and giving birth to their young.

Due to its location close to many of the gray whale nurseries, La Paz is a favorite point of departure for whale watching activities.

January through March are the best months to visit the whales. Favorite locations to get up close and personal are Magdalena Bay and the protected lagoons of Guerrero Negro, Scammon and San Ignacio.

The city’s annual Gray Whale Festival, which takes place mid-January, includes concerts, traditional cuisine and whale-watching expeditions.

Magdalena Bay and other prime viewing locations are located on the Pacific coast. Operators depart La Paz early in the day and you can expect the drive to take about 3 hours. Breakfast, lunch and a snack are usually provided, but you’ll want to check with your tour operator for details.

Upon arrival you’ll transfer to a panga for your time on the water. Many of the pangas are captained by locals who used to work the area as fishermen. Their knowledge of the bay is unmatched, as is their love for the whales.

Whales are intelligent and curious. It is not uncommon for a mother or her baby to approach your panga and float alongside allowing you to pet them for good luck.

Occasionally they’ll nudge your boat – is this for fun? Curiosity? We’ll never know for sure, but we do know that this is not seen as an aggressive move. Enjoy it for what it is…a once-in-a-lifetime encounter.

Whale watching tours are popular and do book up, so let us know in advance if you are interested and we’ll respond with details and current prices. You can then consider your options and let us know if you would like to proceed with confirmation of your tour.

We would love to help you plan an excursion to meet the whales. It truly is an experience of a lifetime!
